What is solarpunk to you, anyway?
Here’s a list of (very selected) non-fiction articles, posts, etc. that have informed our thinking on solarpunk and that contextualize and feed into the discussions that we have on the podcast:
Places to start
“Solarpunk: Notes toward a manifesto” by Adam Flynn (2014)
SOLARPUNK: A REFERENCE GUIDE maintained by Jay Springett of solarpunks.net until early 2018. An excellent list of solarpunk genre archaeology, where you can trace the coalesceningof solarpunk into a coherent ethos. A lot of the older articles here are represented in this list.
“Explainer: ‘solarpunk,’ or how to be an optimistic radical” by Jennifer Hamilton in the Observer (2017)
Solarpunk Magazine‘s About page (2021) sums it up pretty well.
Some elaboration on those grounds:
@solarpunkcitizen’s reply on Tumblr (2018) about anxiety and solarpunk
@thesolarpunknetwork’s tag list is an amazing searchable “index” of online thinking about issues through a solarpunk lens
“Explore Solarpunk SciFi with Sunvault: Stories of Solarpunk and Eco-Speculation” by L.E.H. Light at Black Nerd Problems
Academic articles on solarpunk
“Solarpunk: Against a Shitty Future” by Rhys Williams in the LA Review of Books
“Imagining Action in/Against the Anthropocene: Narrative Impasse and the Necessity of Alternatives to Effect Resistance” by Ariel Kroon in The Goose
This is obviously a non-exhaustive list (and we’re always learning more and trying to find new ways to think about solarpunk), but hopefully it helps to give context to where Solarpunk Presents podcast is coming from, so to speak. Stay tuned for the literature / poetry / art that’s informed us on the solarpunk genre.
